Back To You
Length: Approx. 6:09
Tempo: ♩ = 88
Style: Contemporary Straight-Eighth Ballad
Key: F Major
Difficulty: Grade 2–3
Lead Flugelhorn Range: Written high A
Featured Soloist: Piano (or Rhodes keyboard) Optional substitute: Guitar or Vibraphone
Instrumentation: Standard Big Band (Flugelhorns required)
Description
Inspired by the music of Maria Schneider, Back To You explores atmosphere, colour, and lyrical ensemble writing through a contemporary jazz orchestra setting. Built around suspended harmony and a gentle repeating bass ostinato, the piece creates a spacious sonic world that allows every section of the ensemble to contribute to the evolving texture.
The opening melody is shared between Tenor Saxophone 1 and Flugelhorn 2, floating above sustained harmonic pads before gradually expanding into richer ensemble writing.
The solo section is based on a modal harmonic landscape, encouraging melodic development and expressive phrasing rather than traditional bebop language. While the harmonic framework is open and spacious, soloists are free to interpret the material in their own musical voice.
Following the solo, a full ensemble soli built from constant-structure voicings weaves through predominantly G Dorian sonorities before returning to the final statement of the melody.
The form follows a clear structure: Intro – Head – Solo – Ensemble Soli – Head Out – Outro
Performance Notes
Careful attention to intonation is essential, as much of the harmonic colour comes from close semitone voicings and sustained dissonances.
Dynamic balance should favour transparency over volume, allowing the suspended harmonies and melodic lines to remain clear.
The bass ostinato should remain consistent throughout, providing a stable foundation for the changing harmonic textures.
Encourage soloists to focus on lyrical development, space, and melodic storytelling rather than harmonic density.
